You are a musical artist and you are one of those people who have sworn: “I will never play with backing tracks on stage”.
“I got you, I was one of those who made this speech. For almost 15 years, I toured with bands of different configurations, from a simple duo to 15 musicians on stage, everything was played live. " says Liam, the founder of Sunrise Studio.
However, on certain configurations, it cannot be denied that backing tracks can be a very useful tool. You are a singer, and you perform alone on stage or with a small band of musicians (piano-voice, guitar-voice, etc.), this is the time to explain to you what we can do to improve your performance on stage.
What are "backing tracks"?
These are recorded backing tracks.
This can be purely rhythmic or more consistent with the use of instrumental tracks (string sections, piano, brass, drums, bass, violin, etc.) or vocal (choruses, effects, ambient sounds, etc.).
Everything will depend on the needs of the artist or group.
Why use "backing tracks"?
The first reason is that if you perform alone on stage and you don't play an instrument, you are probably singing on a karaoke track.
The second reason is that if you are part of a small band of musicians (duo, trio), you probably cannot add as many instrumental elements as you would like. For exemple, it could be complicated to find a violinist to play with you when he or she only performs on two pieces of the set.
The idea of the backing track is to be able to add this touch of originality, quality, and this "mass" effect that you wouldn't have been able to have live, and which can sometimes makes all the difference.
How to have "backing tracks"?
You will find many specialized platforms on the Internet with free backing tracks. However, the quality may not be there, and the tone that corresponds to your vocal range may be missing to be able to deliver the best possible performance. In addition, errors can sometimes creep in if they are participatory platforms where the soundtracks are provided by other users.
In fact, everything will depend on your real needs (and your budget too!)
If it's just about practicing singing or playing an instrument, these online playback versions may be perfectly suitable.
On the other hand, if these backing tracks are used in concerts and shows, it can be really interesting to have "custom backing tracks" (created just for you and arranged to match your musical universe).
How do we work on backing tracks at Sunrise Studio?
The case of Damon (visiting Koh Samui, working over several weeks)
Damon is American. He wants to record an album of covers of the biggest pop hits (Robbie Williams, John Lennon, Queen...). With each first brief, Liam creates a new arrangement according to the artist's wishes, records the instruments, records the draft vocal so that the singer can practice on this new version before coming to record it in the studio.
In the end, there will soon be ten songs from global hits which will have been produced in completely revisited versions.
Album in progress.

The case of Linès (remote work)
Linès is a French singer and actress who performs in a "one woman show" entitled “A cocher”. She sings 6 original songs as well as several covers, on karaoke tapes. She decides to call on Sunrise Studio to customize one of the covers she sings on stage: "J'arrive" by Ben Mazué.
We organize a first video exchange in order to discuss her desires.
Subsequently, she sends a detailed brief of what she imagines about the song.
Her wish: to offer an arranged version to her audience and to differentiate it from the original. She also wants to be able to distribute it on streaming and download platforms. There will therefore be a playback version (for her show) and a full version (on Spotify, Apple Music etc.). Liam works on the arrangements and re-records the instruments. Linès then recorded her voice and backing vocals in the studio in France. Liam finalizes the song by taking care of mixing and mastering.

The case of Marco (on site, work lasting several weeks)
Marco, a Dutch singer, is an opera enthusiast.
He is a tenor, and he dreams of readapting great classics to his tessitura. He wants piano-vocal versions for the majority of these songs. Liam is responsible for finding the musicians who will be able to re-record the pieces and creates unique arrangements to make these well-known tunes into original versions. Marco practices on each new release before recording in the studio.
